Quick answer: the Pyramids of Giza are about 500 km (310 miles) from Sharm El Sheikh. That is about 1 hour by plane or 6-7 hours by road. You can visit them from Sharm in one day by flight, or on a 2-day trip by bus.

Is Sharm El Sheikh near the Pyramids?

No. Sharm El Sheikh is at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, and the Pyramids are at Giza, next to Cairo, on the other side of the Gulf of Suez. There are no ancient pyramids in Sharm itself. If you only want a pyramid photo close to your hotel, see the note about the Artificial Pyramid below.

How to get from Sharm El Sheikh to the Pyramids

By plane: about 1 hour

The quickest way. There are domestic flights from Sharm El Sheikh to Cairo, and from Cairo airport it is about an hour’s drive to Giza depending on traffic. This is the only way to see the Pyramids and come back to Sharm on the same day.

By road: about 6-7 hours each way

The road goes north through Sinai and under the Suez Canal. It is a long drive, so most people who go by road stay at least one night in Cairo.

Day trip by flight or 2-day trip by bus?

Cairo day trip by flight

  • Hotel pickup very early in the morning (about 4:30 AM) and back in Sharm in the evening.
  • Return flights Sharm-Cairo, a guide, entry to the Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Egyptian Museum, and lunch are included.
  • Best if you have one day and want less time on the road.

Cairo by bus, 2 days

  • Pickup at night from your hotel and the drive happens overnight.
  • One night in a hotel in Cairo with breakfast, a guide, entry to the Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Egyptian Museum, and two lunches.
  • Best if you want to spend less and don’t mind a long road trip.

There is also a 2-day Cairo trip by flight with a hotel night if you want more time without the long drive. All three are on the Cairo and Giza page.

What you see at Giza

  • The Great Pyramid and the other two main pyramids of the Giza Plateau.
  • The Sphinx, next to the valley temple.
  • The Egyptian Museum in Cairo, with thousands of ancient objects.
  • Going inside a pyramid costs extra and is not included in the tour price.

Real pyramids vs the Artificial Pyramid in Sharm

The Artificial Pyramid is a modern pyramid in the desert near Sharm El Sheikh that you can visit on a quad bike or camel safari in half a day. It is good for photos, but it is not an ancient monument. The real Pyramids of Giza are about 4,500 years old and need a full day from Sharm. More in our comparison of the two.

When to go

Cairo is very hot from June to August, so a day at Giza is easier from October to April. See the best time to visit Sharm El Sheikh for the weather month by month.

What to bring
